A Special Assessment is a tax imposed against properties that will benefit from a proposed public improvement.

 

Common examples of a special assessment are:

 

Sidewalks

Sewer

Water

 

Special assessments different from property taxes in that they are for a specific improvement or service whereas property taxes are for support of the general functions of government.
