Question:  Does a bedroom require a closet?

Answer:  No.  There is no mention of a closet requirement in Appendix D, the 4150.2 Handbook, three sets of FHA FAQ's or the HOC National Reference Guide.  If it's not written it isn't so.

I mentioned this to Don Fairnot of FHA in a phone conversation on July 20, 2008 and he confirmed that there was no requirement that a bedroom have a closet.  He did reiterate that a bedroom have egress.  Hmmm...a room without a closet may be a bedroom and a room with a closet but no egress is not be a bedroom.

Followup Question: Would you call attention to the lack of a closet even though a closet is not required?

Answer:  No.
