The Average Deviation is calculated as follows:

 

1.Calculate the mean (average) of a group of numbers
2.Calculate the deviation by subtracting the number from the mean of the group of numbers
3.Ignore an any negative numbers
4.The average deviation is the mean of the deviations resulting from the above process
